As we celebrate Thanksgiving, it’s a time to reflect on the blessings God gives us, even amid adversity. Often, it is in challenging times that we discover some of our greatest gifts. Our home is a place where many of these gifts are revealed, and I am grateful to be part of this mission of hope. Our guests arrive facing significant challenges, but through the power of the Holy Spirit, many leave our hospitality with renewed hope and dignity.
Recently, I recorded a podcast with Bishop William Joensen of Des Moines at the Iowa Catholic Radio studio. Bishop Joensen graciously allowed us to share our message with his listeners, discussing how Pope Leo’s recent Apostolic Exhortation, titled “Dilexi te” (“Love of the Poor”), is reflected in the work we do at the Ames Romero House. Through our mission, we find numerous ways to “love the poor” in our home. The Church’s social teachings and the Magisterium over the past two hundred years have emphasized the importance of advocating for the poor and using our resources to serve them, as illustrated in both the Old and New Testaments.
The story of the Good Samaritan is a prime example of what we witness in Ames. We must remember that this story remains relevant today.
In Pope Leo’s Exhortation, he writes, “If I encounter a person sleeping outdoors on a cold night, I can view him or her as an annoyance, an idler, an obstacle in my path, a troubling sight, a problem for politicians to sort out, or even as refuse cluttering a public space. Or I can respond with faith and charity, seeing in this person a human being with dignity equal to my own, a creature infinitely loved by the Father, an image of God, and a brother or sister redeemed by Jesus Christ. That is what it means to be a Christian!”

As Christians, do we simply walk past the homeless person on the street, or do we respond with care, support, and love, just as the Good Samaritan did? The beauty of our mission lies in the daily opportunity we have to practice our faith by helping those who might otherwise be overlooked in the chaos of our society. Our home can serve as a welcoming space for anyone in our community to get involved and live out their faith. We invite everyone to participate.
Following the recording session, when I arrived at our home that day for hospitality, I witnessed the beauty of our mission in action. Several volunteers came out on a cold November day to serve. From the FOCUS missionaries and ISU students to several retirees who prepared a hearty meal for our guests; to Jasmine, who came to cut hair and trim beards; and Sam from MICA, who drove her mobile food pantry van to deliver bags of food and supplies, every action embodied the spirit of service. Volunteers also cared for guests who needed new shoes because their boots had holes, as well as distributing toiletries, gloves, and other essential items to brave the cold weather. It’s this kind of human interaction, free from judgment, that reassures me we are embodying the key elements of “Dilexi te” and practicing our faith as Jesus intended.
Our mission is vibrant, and we invite everyone in our community to participate in any
way you can. We are living the Gospel daily at the Ames Romero House.

During our Friendsgiving meal on November 26, we invited those who are marginalized to our table. Jesus, the humble Messiah, not only presented Himself as a figure of humility but also embraced the poor, often inviting those in need to His table rather than the rich and powerful, since the poor do not have the means to repay. This Thanksgiving, we are grateful for our community in Ames, which has made significant efforts to support our brothers and sisters in need. We appreciate those who volunteer, donate, and pray for us as we strive to live out the teachings of the Gospels in our community. If you have time in your busy schedules, we invite you to join us in serving those in need. We wish you all a blessed Advent season and a joyful Christmas.
In Christ,
David Thielen
