Mission

We provide daytime assistance where individuals in need can come to share
food, fellowship, and access various amenities. Our foundation rests on
principles of solidarity with those experiencing poverty, hospitality towards
them, and fostering community connections. Inspired by the Catholic Worker
movement and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we are dedicated to
offering hospitality to those seeking help.

Our faith informs our actions at Ames Romero House. Without the
nourishment and strength that come from prayer and our relationship with
God, we have nothing to give. As it is said, “You cannot give what you do not
have.” If we wish to love, we must first be filled by the One who offers love
freely. “God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God,” and “Rivers of
living water will flow from within them” (1 John 4:16 and John 7:38).

Our Faith

We are funded by personal and private donations from families, churches,
organizations, and individuals in the community. We do not receive funding
from government or secular agencies, which allows us to focus on witnessing
Christ and embodying His teachings. While we are part of the Catholic
Church community, we do not receive financial support from the Archdiocese
of Dubuque. We believe that those who contribute to the Ames Romero
House should also commit to serving there.

Ames Romero House serves as a gathering place where generosity, poverty, and purpose converge. Above all, it’s about encountering Jesus Christ, who is present in every person, Sacrament, and action. This encounter reminds us that love is alive, and we are called to be vessels of that love, sharing it with others while also receiving it ourselves. As St. John Paul II said, “Man cannot fully find himself except through a sincere gift of himself.”

Matt Mitchell – Founder of ARH

Every guest who enters our home comes with the hope of a better life. Our
goal is to support them on their life journey and assist them in areas beyond
our core capabilities. We invite you to join us in supporting our services
through volunteering and prayer.
